The search is free. The records are free.
There can be any number of people in your life to do a background check on: your babysitter, your future employee, your future boss, your house cleaner, your neighbor who will feed your cat when you're on vacation (and have access to almost everything you own), the parents of the friend your child is to stay the night with, your blind date this Friday night...etc., etc. Is there an online site to go to that really is FREE?
There are many sites out there claiming to be "free criminal records" but once a search is made, the site then asks for a one-time fee or a yearly membership fee in order to see the said records. Charges are anywhere from $2.95 to as much as $49.95. I have paid for records a couple of times and some have proven beneficial. But, it still annoyed me that each site claimed to be "free" yet wasn't free.
The wording of these pay sites are extremely misleading. I don't have a problem with any of the sites charging, but if they are going to charge for their services, they shouldn't advertize otherwise. Try to Google search "free criminal records" and you'll see several pages full of sites that claim to be free. The loop-hole is in the wording -- the "search" is free; the records, however, are not.
I have finally found one site that is what it says it is. It not only allows you to search for free, but also shows the information for free. The site's name is "Criminal Searches" and can be found here: http://www.CriminalSearches.com.
I'm not sure if the site has ALL the records on a specific person, but I'm also equally not sure any of the pay sites do either. The difference is there's no risk with the free site since you can search as many times as you like, totally FREE of charge!
Search results may tell you:
- Any known aliases the person may use.
- Birthday
- Height
- Weight
- Hair color
- Eye color
- Race and
- Gender
The next group of information will list each criminal offense, as well as the:
- Offense Date
- Case Number
- Offense Type (theft, forgery, speeding ticket)
- Offense Code
- Offense Description
- Date the offense was reported
- Verdict Finding and/or Guilty/Not Guilty Plea
- Deposition Date
Each criminal offense is also categorized into these categories:
- BV - Behavioral
- Bu - Business
- D - Drug and Alcohol
- S - Sex Related
- T - Theft/Robbery
- V - Violent
- O - Traffic/Other
Not all the information above is filled in for every offense, but there's enough there to give you the information you need.

Since writing this article, that website has now changed. When searching for a certian person it has shown me results to before, now it only shows that there's a record, but will no longer give the details like it used to. It was good while it lasted. Now the big "people search" companies are charging on this site too. For the last couple of years I've referred to this site and it worked. Too bad it has changed hands.

I agree with Angie. This site is BS. It's just like the crap that Amazon, Imdb (by the way now owned by Amazon), TV Guide, Xfinity, etc, etc pull. You Google up a topic or subject and you get a list of them including ones that claim to be free. You get there, only to find that nothing is free. It's ironic that I while searching the criminal record of an individual that I would end up at a place where in the real world would be a crime. "False advertising and Bait and switch. What is even more IRONIC is that the person I was going to research is 2 posts ahead of me.
